Strategy

Reads what is known about this client and their market, then works out what is worth arguing, how to argue it, and writes the copy. Takes a few minutes.

Insights

what is worth arguing, and why only we can

Four in five Occra students arrived because someone already in the room told them to come — so the honest ad to a parent is not a pitch, it's an instruction: ask your kid which of their friends already goes.

killedreframedraft

Only we can say it: A competitor running on paid acquisition cannot say this, because if they said it their own lead mix would contradict it the moment anyone asked. The specific claim rests on two measured numbers Occra holds — roughly 80-85% of leads from referrals and roughly 5% churn — and on a structural fact that makes the check easy: only Sec 3 and Sec 4, roughly 67 students, so referrals cluster inside a small number of school cohorts and a parent's child plausibly already knows someone attending. A large chain with thousands of students spread across all levels cannot promise the parent that the check is available in their child's own social circle, and a centre that buys its leads cannot survive the check at all.

Critic: The ownability argument conflates the internal fact (measured referral rate) with the ad's actual claim, which is just 'ask your kid.' That instruction is available to any small centre that is genuinely locally dense and referral-heavy, not just to Occra — the specific percentages Occra holds never surface in the copy, so the check the ad invites is passable by many real competitors, not just large paid-acquisition chains. The insight sets up a straw competitor (mass paid-acquisition chain) and ignores the nearer one (another small tutor with real word-of-mouth) who could run this unchanged. Could be run unchanged by: Any small, word-of-mouth-driven local tuition centre with a handful of cohorts and a high referral rate — the mechanism doesn't require disclosing Occra's actual 80-85% figure, just the instruction 'ask your kid who already goes,' which any boutique centre with real local density could say with equal honesty..

8 constraints on how this may be written
  • — Do not present the referral share as pure unpaid word of mouth — the $50 cash reward and the iPhone at ten referrals exist and hiding them is the kind of thing a fifteen-year-old will expose in the check we just invited
  • — Do not claim grade improvements, distinction rates, or A1 outcomes — no approved fact supports any results figure
  • — Do not lead with the $45 crash course price or the $100 discount as the idea; price is the offer, not the argument
  • — Do not use the exhausted category claims: experienced tutors, small class sizes, proven results, personalised attention, MOE-trained
  • — Do not run this as a formal or professional talking-head educational piece — the client has said that format and the bottle-spinning creative did not land
  • — Do not reference JC, primary or Sec 1 students; the centre teaches Sec 3 and Sec 4, with Sec 2 admitted only via the crash course
  • — Do not frame the parent as negligent or the child as failing; the pain here is choosing badly, not present-tense crisis
  • — Do not invent a named referring student or a fabricated testimonial
